Young Artists Awards Reception Held at Yellowstone Art Museum

City-Wide Students are Honored!

Soroptimist International of Billings is pleased to announce this year's 2004 recipients of their YOUNG ARTISTS AWARD PROGRAM. The competition was judged by Linda Ewart, and other members of the Yellowstone Art Museum. This year’s event commemorated the third year of the Young Artists’ Gallery at the Yellowstone Art Museum and the eighth year of the YOUNG ARTIST PROGRAM. Art teachers, from the Billings and surrounding area, are invited to submit up to four pieces of student art, in any medium and theme, to be showcased at the Soroptimist charity fundraiser "A Night of Wine and Roses”. The event is scheduled for January 29, 2005, to be held at The Depot.

This year’s winners are First Place winner “My Cave, My Painting” by Thomas Marnin of Senior High School, Second Place Winner “Maple” by Maggie Connors of Senior High School, Third Place Winner “Maggie” by Adam Ellis of Skyview High School and Honorable Mention “Amethyst and Ebony” by Leila del Duca of Senior High School. The Young Artists competition provides art students the opportunity to receive recognition of their talents, and for their work to be sold for the benefit of the community. The Young Artist's display was at the Yellowstone Art Museum. Congratulations to all the student participants.  Congratulations to their teachers Diana Mysse Art Teacher from Billings Skyview and Adrian Wegner Art Teacher from Billings Senior!

Press Release May 24, 2004

Soroptimist Linda Gordon, website designer and owner of Shop Montana, was selected by Venture Club of Billings as Outstanding Soroptimist of the year.  Linda was also awarded the Outstanding Soroptimist of the Year from Northwest Region Venture Clubs of America and received the Linda Klinger Award.

Linda has been the Venture Club Advisor this year. During that time she has been a constant voice of strength, support and optimism. Soroptimist of Billings http://www.shopmt.com/sib have been serving the community for over sixty years. Soroptimist identify needs of our community, then establishes specific projects to address these needs with funds raised at “A Night of Wine and Roses” held yearly in January. Venture Club is a service project of Soroptimist.  Venture Club http://www.shopmt.com/venture is an organization of diverse, young, professional women committed to making a difference in their community through volunteering in community service, professional development, and personal growth.

     On April 23, 2003, Soroptimist International of Billings presented their annual charity awards at a banquet held at The Northern Hotel in downtown Billings. 
    
Peg Dare, Immediate Past President and Joey Voto, Vice President of Soroptimist, coordinated the event.  The Soroptimists annual fund raiser, “A Night of Wine and Roses” was held in January at The Depot.  Over $30,000 was raised at this event ...more

The Young Artists Program sponsored by Soroptimist International of Billings welcomes the public to a reception at the Yellowstone Art Museum on May 16th from 6:30-7:30 pm. The show features local and regional High School students.  The student art was judged by Senior Curator Ben Mitchell and Curatorial Assistant Jennifer Hawke.  First Place went to Cameron Burt of Skyview High School.  Second Place to Shelly Grabb of Senior High School.  Third Place to Keri Padon of Billings Central Catholic High School.  Honorable Mention went to Cheltse Jones of Huntley Project High School.  Yellowstone Art Museum Honorable Mention went to Brian James of Senior High School.

Women’s Opportunity Award Winner

            Women’s Opportunity Award, for mature head of households for education or retraining to enable them to upgrade their job status or re-enter the work force, was awarded to Rachel Hauglid.   Rachel’s application and competition continues to the upper levels in the Soroptimist organization.  She has further been awarded Soroptimists Northwestern Region Women’s Opportunity Award.  Soroptimist Northwestern Region covers Montana, part of Idaho, Washington, Oregon and Alaska.

For two Shepherd High School students, love of nature has paved the way for award-winning art.  Kaycee Schultz and Nadia Reitz, both juniors, were among the four prize winners for the 2001 Young Artist's Program, sponsored by the Soroptimist International of Billings. Schultz received first place for her colored pencil piece, "Crane," which she described as "a picture of a crane standing in water, grooming its feathers, with its neck turned around, mostly in blue." ...more

Baby Think It Over visits Farmers' Market and the Billings Community!  

Accompanied by President Peg Dare, BTIO and Soroptimist, visit the Farmers Market.  The Farmers Market is and open-air market established in 1986 and is held in downtown Billings.  Soroptimist continue in their effort to keep up community awareness about the Baby Think It Over Program, which is a Teen pregnancy prevention program in Billings School District #2, Yellowstone County high schools and Big Horn County high schools.  President Peg sold local vegetables grown by Immediate Past President Linda and her husband Greg Gordon.

What’s it like caring for a baby?  Misty Bartok said she didn’t get much sleep the two nights she watched over an infant.  “I was up and down both nights,” Misty, a senior at West High, told other West High students in a marriage and family-life class on Thursday.   Another senior, Tory Bentz, said a babysitter she had lined up to watch the baby in her care canceled at the last moment.  “So I took the baby to work, and then handed it over to my boyfriend,” Tory said.  She said the experience was a real wake-up call.  “It made me totally think about waiting a long ways down the road to have a baby,” Tory said ...more

01/27/2001   Soroptimist’s ‘A Night of Wine and Roses’  Raises funds for Causes

     Three very different but equally worthy community projects and two women furthering their education will benefit from a fun night on the town this weekend.  “A Night of Wine and Roses” is the annual fund-raising event sponsored by Soroptimist International of Billings. In its 13th year, the auction and wine tasting is scheduled for this Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Hilands Golf Club starting at 7 p.m. A selection of over 60 vintage wines will be complemented by an hors d’oeuvre buffet. A silent auction featuring artwork, trips and wines will also be presented.
     Major recipients of the funds raised by the event this year will be Family Tree Center, The Rimrock Humane Society and Yellowstone River Parks Association. Funds are always donated to local charities and individuals in the spirit of Soroptimist, which is truly an international program.
     According to publicity chairman Vicki Dunaway, “Every year, we ask organizations to submit an application with budgets and goals. A panel carefully evaluate them based on their worthiness.” ...more
